Club Ranking: Who’s your team?

19 June, 2015

Jose Royo

They say that there is strength in numbers. Every year we see new running clubs and existing running clubs increasing their memberships. Runners come together banded by the colors of their club to set goals, push each other on and create long-lasting friendships forged in the fires of long distance running. Running clubs are the beating heart of marathons; the groups of runners flying the flag for their club bring life and color to any running event.

For people who have recently taken up running there are two options: run alone, or, almost without realizing it…. Drift in with another group of runners who you will eventually run alongside in races.

In La Ciudad de Running there are many different clubs and groups to choose from. But, if there is one club that stands head and shoulders above all others it is the SD correcaminos (Road Runners Athletic Club). Since 1979 the correcaminos club has been pounding the Valencian streets and parks, their total number of members is now just over 600. Not only are they one of the biggest, they are also one of the most active; they founded and still organize the Valencia Marathon and Half Marathon. The Correcaminos may be the most well known club but that doesn’t mean they are the only option; there are many federated and un-federated clubs that you can see running at events. Some things that are the same for all clubs is to have fun, socialize and get the most out of running.

The Valencia Marathon and Half Marathon, more clubs run every year

As the number of total runners for the Trinidad Alfonso Valencia Marathon and half Marathon goes up, so does the number of clubs returning every year, or participating for the first time. Large distances are fantastic group exercises; running and training together is a great way to get ready for a race. There is a healthy competition in the clubs and between the different clubs; a competiveness that gives even more energy and feeling to a city that lives for running.

In the ranking of registered club runners the leader at the moment in the marathon and half marathon is Redolat Team followed by SD Correcaminos and Team 3FDC. In the rankings we have only shown the top 15 clubs for both events, there are many more clubs and groups that send runners to the marathon but they didn’t make it on to the list. Over the next few weeks we expect to see some new entries in the rankings.

We should also give a worthy mention to some of the international clubs that send groups of runners to the Trinidad Alfonso Valencian Marathon. We have a large group of runners from shores afar! Here are the honorable mentions: CAMBE GOUILLE from France, BISCEGLIE RUNNING from Italy and AC BREAK from Belgium. So, when you come to La Ciudad del Running you will be able to see a great mix of Spanish and international runners representing their clubs and crossing the finish line that sits majestically on the lake of the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences complex.
