We are working to make the Valencia Half Marathon Trinidad Alfonso Zurich ever more sustainable and environmentally friendly because we believe that every action we take, no matter how small, can have a positive impact on the future.
We are acting in different areas related to the event to make improvements wherever possible: waste, emissions, associated products, supply chain and training.

ISO 14064 Carbon Footprint Seal
The Valencia Half Marathon calculates and verifies the event’s total carbon footprint under the ISO 14064 standard, in collaboration with GO2 by Global Omnium.
In 2025, the footprint was 432.77 kgCO₂e per runner.

Valencia Half Marathon Trinidad Alfonso Zurich – ABW STANDARD BRONZE
GREEN SPONSOR
The Valencia Half Marathon Trinidad Alfonso Zurich features GO2 by Global Omnium as its green sponsor to drive environmental care. Through this partnership, the event’s carbon footprint is measured and verified.
In 2025, the emission ratio was 432.77 kgCO₂e per runner. Nearly 95% of its carbon footprint is linked to runner travel and accommodation.
3R: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
Reusable Event Bags
The two bags distributed to participants, at the runner’s expo and after completing the race, are completely reusable.
Waste Management
Through a partnership with Ecoembes, the “Run, Recycle, and Breathe” initiative is rolled out during the races. Separate yellow and blue bins are stationed throughout the runner’s expos as well as along the course.
During the 2025 half marathon, a total of 8,560 kg of waste was recovered:
- 5,080 kg of plastic containers, cans, and beverage cartons.
- 3,480 kg of paper and cardboard.
Clothing Recycling & Charity Drive
In partnership with the association La Casa Grande de Valencia, a charitable clothing collection takes place at the race start line. Volunteers assist in gathering thousands of items used by runners to protect themselves from the cold. These garments are then given a second life, promoting both the circular economy and inclusive employment opportunities.
A total of 299 kg of clothes was collected during the 2025 Valencia Half Marathon.
“A la lona de Valencia”
The canvas banners used throughout the event are given a second life through El Rincón de Velluters, an organization focused on the social and labor integration of individuals with mental health challenges. Under the project name ‘A la lona de Valencia’, they repurpose these materials into tote bags, backpacks, wallets, and other daily accessories.
A total of 280 m² of event canvas was repurposed by the association in 2025.
Casa Caridad Product Donations
All leftover perishable products from the event (persimmons, bananas, etc.) are donated to Casa Caridad Valencia to maximize the use of food resources.
The organization operates under a strict food waste reduction policy.
Official T-shirt
The event T-shirt is made from a fabric composed of 100% recycled polyester.
EMISSIONS
Hyundai ECO Vehicles
The vehicles used in the event feature Hyundai’s ECO technology. A fleet of ECO vehicles, consisting of Hyundai hybrids and plug-in hybrids, is used for the lead car and for organizational transport.
Yamaha NEO’s Motorcycles
The motorcycles used during the event are mostly electric Yamaha NEO’s. Thanks to their lightweight design, tire size, and outstanding maneuverability, they allow riders to move agilely along the course, while also being quiet and efficient.
TRANSPORT
Sharing motorcycles
The organization has partnered with a moped-sharing company to promote the use of shared electric motorcycles as a way to travel to the event.
RENFE Agreement
All runners and their families receive a minimum 15% discount on train travel to València during the event days, encouraging sustainable and clean transport.
VALENCIAN CULTURE
Artisan Heritage
The lanyards for the half marathon winners’ medals are crafted using traditional Valencian silk, which is the exact same textile utilized in making the traditional attire for the Fallas festivities.
This custom fabric is produced exclusively for the race by Compañía Valenciana de la Seda, a renowned local manufacturer with a history spanning more than two centuries.
Promoting Traditional Music
Traditional Valencian brass and marching bands are stationed at various points along the course to cheer on the runners. Spectators will also find tabal i dolçaina (traditional drum and reed pipe) groups performing at different locations.
SUPPLY CHAIN
Local Suppliers
More than 70% of our suppliers are local. The vast majority of product and service providers for the event are locally sourced, being based right here in the Comunidad Valenciana.
Local Produce
The half marathon promotes the distribution of locally sourced food. Finisher bags include Bouquet persimmons, provided by Anecoop.
AIR QUALITY MONITORING
The Valencia Half Marathon, in collaboration with the Acoustic Pollution and Environmental Analysis Department of the Ajuntament de València, works to share real-time information regarding the city’s air quality.

EDUCATION

Around a hundred volunteers inform runners about recycling and waste reduction during the race expos for both events.
Thanks to the Vithas Group, event volunteers receive training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques.
EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND SOCIAL INCLUSION
The Half Marathon promotes concrete actions to foster inclusion and diversity among all participants.

Adapted Categories: Supported by CaixaBank and the ‘La Caixa’ Foundation, there are 4 distinct categories for athletes with functional diversity, featuring 57 competitors and 14 guides.

Inclusive Volunteering: 1% of the event’s volunteer and staff team are individuals with disabilities.

Red Point: Dedicated stations fully stocked with pads and tampons, available for anyone who might need them.
PREVIOUS INITIATIVES
“BOTTLE TO BOTTLE“
In 2019, alongside Coca-Cola and Ecoembes, a pioneering initiative in Spain and worldwide was launched focusing on packaging recycling and the circular economy: “Bottle to Bottle.”
Thanks to this project, nearly 11,000 kilograms of plastic packaging generated during the 2019 Valencia Marathon were transformed into the one million Aquabona water bottles made from 25% recycled plastic that were used in the 2020 Valencia Marathon Elite Edition.
