The Valencia Marathon Trinidad Alfonso Zurich has exceeded the 30,000-finisher mark for the first time in its 45-year history, with 30,777 runners completing the race according to the provisional results. The race, which took place today in bright sunshine, also set a new record for charitable donations.
Valencia City of Running enjoyed a spectacular day in which thousands of people took to the streets to cheer on the runners at more than 160 cheering stations organised by sponsors, associations, sports clubs, the committees belonging to the Valencia Central Fallas Board and the schools participating in the project The Marathon Goes to School. In fact, there was not a single kilometre along the route without someone cheering on the runners, who suffered a little more than usual due to the high temperatures.
This year’s charity partner, the Pequeño Deseo Foundation, which participated in the race with great enthusiasm in the final kilometres, also received the historic figure of €91,902, of which €50,025 was voluntarily donated by runners on registration, while €30,777 was contributed by the Z Zurich Foundation through its one euro per finisher initiative. To these two large figures must be added the €3,600 from the registrations for the MSC Valencia Mini Marathon, 100% of which was donated to charity, as well as the €7,500 contributed by New Balance from its NB Long Run event.
Sustainability certificates presentation
The Valencia Marathon Trinidad Alfonso Zurich is not only a major sporting event, but also a benchmark in sustainability. For many years now, the organisers have been promoting initiatives such as recycling, the use of public transport, electric vehicles and the measurement of its carbon footprint. Thanks to these actions, the Marathon has received international recognition including the Green Sport Flag and the World Athletics Standard for a Better World. For the second consecutive year, its carbon footprint was calculated once again this year with the support of our green sponsor GO2 by Global Omnium. The event has also been awarded the Sustainable Sports Event seal promoted by the Spanish Olympic Committee, as verified by Bureau Veritas. These certificates were presented to the city’s mayor, María José Cervera, alongside the director of the event Paco Borao.
